What is TMJD? Understanding Symptoms, Causes, and Treatment Options for TMJ Dysfunction

What is TMJD?

The TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint) is what connects the mandible (lower jaw) to the skull, just under the ears. The muscles of the TMJ control chewing. Dysfunction or malalignment can affect the neck, shoulders, face, and teeth.

According to one study, TMJD affects 20 to 40% of the adult population. Studies have found massage to be extremely helpful in managing TMJ pain and TMJD symptoms.

Signs you may have TMJ dysfunction

2022 research Trusted Source outlines the following as possible symptoms of TMJD:

  • muscular pain when chewing, swallowing, or speaking

  • restricted movement, such as limitations when opening the mouth

  • clicking, popping, and cracking of the jaw

  • dental issues such as misaligned teeth

  • pain in the neck, scalp, and shoulders

  • frequent headaches

  • pain and tenderness at the joint

  • pain, ringing, or itchiness in the ears

  • dizziness

There are multiple causes as to why one may experience TMJD. It is always good protocol to check in w/ your GP/MD prior seeing me for treatment. Any further questions and details will be shared during your treatment(s). Your booking for TMJ may fall under either Restorative or Injury. TMJ treatment can be incorporated as part of a 60 min massage, there are also 30 min and 45 min options available. For 30/45 min TMJ treatments, please call in to book.

Note: I also incorporate a few TMJ techniques into any Head, Neck & Shoulder routine for those seeking relaxation/stress reduction treatments.
